Three massive Katla fish, weighing a combined 63kg, were caught by fishermen in the Padma River at Daulatdia in Rajbari district on Sunday. The fish were eventually purchased by a London expatriate residing in Sylhet for a total of Tk1,16,200.
The fish, weighing 25kg, 20kg, and 18kg respectively, were caught at approximately 6:00 am in the Char Karnasuna area of the river by local fishermen Babu Haldar, Arif, and Ershad. Following the catch, the fishermen brought the giants to the Daulatdia Terminal for an open auction.
In the subsequent bidding process, the 25kg Katla was sold at Anu Kha’s warehouse for Tk2,100 per kg, fetching a total of Tk52,500. At Rezaul’s warehouse, the 20kg fish was sold at Tk1,700 per kg for Tk34,000, while the 18kg fish was sold at Tk1,300 per kg, totalling Tk23,400.
Local fish trader Shahjahan Sheikh initially secured all three fish for a combined price of Tk1,09,900. He later resold them to the London expatriate in Sylhet district at a profit of Tk 100 per kg, bringing the final sale price to Tk1,16,200.
District Fisheries Officer Md. Mahbub Ul Huq stated that the availability of such large-sized fish is the result of the proper implementation of various government restrictions aimed at increasing fish production.
