At least 10 people were injured and more than 50 cocktails reportedly exploded during a series of clashes between two groups in Madaripur Sadar Upazila on Wednesday night.
The violence broke out in the Balia Nawhata area of Mastofapur Union following an altercation between two women, police and local sources said.
The injured include Nasir Hawlader, 35, his wife Runi Begum, Sumaiya, daughter of Ayub Ali Matubbar, and a van driver, among others. They were taken to Madaripur Sadar Hospital and several private clinics for treatment.
According to police, the incident began in the evening when Runi Begum and Sumaiya became involved in a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical scuffle. Relatives and supporters from both sides later gathered at the scene, some carrying locally made weapons, heightening tensions in the area.
Witnesses said repeated chases and counter-chases ensued before full-scale clashes erupted. During the confrontation, more than 50 cocktails were detonated, spreading panic among residents.
The explosions and violence forced locals to seek shelter indoors as fear gripped the neighbourhood.
Police and members of the Rapid Action Battalion rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the unrest and brought the situation under control.
Madaripur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said the situation was now calm. “Legal action is being processed against those involved,” he said.
Authorities said additional police had been deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
