Over one million taxpayers have successfully submitted their income tax returns online in the current fiscal year 2025-26. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has hailed this figure as a highly encouraging milestone in the digital transformation of the tax administration system.
NBR’s Public Relations Officer Md Al Amin Sheikh said Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed formally inaugurated the online e-return submission system through the NBR’s website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd on 4 August.
Since then, taxpayers have been comfortably using the digital platform.
This year, the NBR has made online income tax filing mandatory for all individual taxpayers through a special directive- except for foreign citizens working in Bangladesh, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers, Bangladeshis residing abroad, physically challenged or specially-abled taxpayers, and senior citizens aged 65 or above.
However, those exempted may also submit their returns online if they wish.
If any taxpayer faces registration-related issues in the e-return system, they may apply to the concerned Deputy Tax Commissioner by 15 November. Upon approval based on valid reasons, they will be allowed to file paper-based returns.
Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad are also filing e-returns easily. By submitting their passport number, national ID number, and email address to [email protected], they receive an OTP and registration link via email.
The e-return system does not require uploading any documents- taxpayers only need to input details of their income, expenses, assets, and liabilities to instantly print the Acknowledgement Slip and Income Tax Certificate.
This simplified process has made e-return filing increasingly popular among taxpayers both at home and abroad.
To further assist taxpayers, the NBR has arranged online training workshops this year as well. Alongside taxpayers, income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, and chartered secretaries have also received training on the e-return process.
In addition, the NBR has launched a call center (09643 71 71 71) to provide prompt telephone support for any e-return-related issues. Services are also available through the eTax Service option on www.etaxnbr.gov.bd and from e-return help desks set up in every tax region across the country.
The NBR has urged all individual taxpayers to complete their income tax return submissions for the FY 2025-26 through the e-return system by 30 November.
