One killed in Habiganj factional feud

One person was killed and at least 20 others from both sides were injured in a clash between supporters of two union parishad members in Lakhai upazila of Habiganj, stemming from a previous feud.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning in Faridpur village of Bolla union. The deceased has been identified as Hiraj Mia, 55.

According to local and police sources, a long-standing feud over land, water bodies, and other issues has been ongoing between supporters of Bolla Union Parishad members Alal Mia and Mukhles Mia. Clashes and casualties between them have occurred before.

On Saturday morning, both sides engaged in a clash using locally made weapons. Hiraj Mia was critically injured during the clash. He was taken to the 250-bed district hospital in Habiganj, where doctors declared him dead.

At least 20 others from both factions also received treatment at the hospital.

Lakhai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (acting) Zahidul Haque said police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and brought the situation under control.

Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avert any untoward incidents. The body of Hiraj Mia is being kept at the Habiganj morgue. It will be handed over to his family after an autopsy is completed.
