A police officer-in-charge and a sub-inspector were injured in a machete attack while conducting an operation to arrest criminals involved in a snatching incident in the capital’s Adabor area on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 4pm in the Nabadoy Housing Delta Garments area under Adabor Police Station, according to police officials.
Assistant Police Commissioner (AC) of Mohammadpur Zone Abdullah Al Mamun told TIMES that police launched the operation following a snatching incident where a bKash agent was attacked and robbed.
Under the leadership of OC Jahidul Islam, police conducted the operation. At that time, the suspects attacked the police team with machetes, injuring OC Jahidul and Sub-Inspector Tarun.
Police fired back in self-defence, injuring two suspects identified as Russell (26) and Amir (25). They have been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Two others named Joy and Kashem have also been arrested.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) Md Jewel Rana confirmed that police fired in self-defence. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tejgaon Division Ibne Mizan said Adabor Police Station conducted a raid at a room in the Beribadh area, where the suspects attacked the police team.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order following the incident.
