A court has sent Apurba Pal, a North South University student arrested on allegations of desecrating the Holy Quran, to jail. Bhatara Police Station arrested him from house number 77 on Road No 12 in Block F of the capital’s Bashundhara residential area around midnight on Saturday. A case has been filed against him for hurting religious sentiments.
OC Rakibul Hasan of Bhatara Police Station stated that the student, who was injured after being beaten by a crowd, received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was produced in court on Sunday afternoon. After a hearing, the court ordered him to be sent to jail.
Police reported that Apurba Pal deliberately placed the Holy Quran on the ground outside a classroom, kicked it, and tore its pages while recording a video.
Upon witnessing this scene, surrounding students erupted in anger and became involved in an argument and physical altercation with him. Subsequently, campus security personnel arrived at the scene and removed him from the campus.
Meanwhile, students reported that on Saturday afternoon, some videos desecrating the Quran were posted from the accused student’s Facebook account. These videos then spread rapidly on Facebook.
Afterwards, various people began demanding his punishment on social media. Eventually, at night, a group of students and the public gathered in front of the student’s residence, protesting and demanding punishment. Later, police arrived, rescued him, arrested him, and took him to the police station.
