The National Sports Council dissolved the Bangladesh Athletics Federation executive committee in Dhaka on Saturday and appointed Advocate Ali Imam Tapan as the new general secretary.
The council placed Tapan into the role as part of a sweeping restructure that dissolved 27 national sports bodies. The NSC ordered each new interim committee to hold democratic elections within three months to transfer power to permanent executives.
The council issued separate notifications on Saturday to remove the previous leadership groups. The NSC took action after the old committees failed to hold constitutional elections. Alongside athletics, the sports overhaul affected bodies governing archery, swimming, chess, and kabaddi.
Tapan returns to an organisation that he managed previously. He served as the general secretary of the athletics federation during the last Bangladesh Nationalist Party government. He also retains his current position as the president of the Tangail District Football Association.
The review committee of the NSC recommended these structural changes following a thorough assessment of the country’s sports sector. The interim bodies must now coordinate with regional divisional and district sports associations to modernise sports administration across Bangladesh.
