Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has warned that no irregularities, favouritism or political bias will be accepted in the distribution of relief assistance among flood-affected people.
“Immediate action will be taken if any allegations of corruption or irregularities are found in the relief distribution process,” the minister said while talking to journalists after handing over relief materials to flood victims at Khankhanabad Union under Banshkhali in Chattogram on Wednesday.
Before distributing the relief, Dulu inspected the excavation work of the Purba Dhomra Jalkadar Khal in Ward No. 5 of Khankhanabad Union.
He said the government is closely monitoring the natural disasters that have recently hit several regions, including Sylhet, Habiganj and greater Chattogram.
The minister said adequate relief supplies have already been allocated as emergency support for affected communities following directives from the prime minister.
He stressed that the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, nepotism and any form of discrimination.
“Flood victims should not be considered on the basis of political identity. Relief assistance must reach every person affected by the disaster,” he said.
Speaking about the canal excavation project, Dulu said the government’s goal is to ensure proper drainage during the rainy season and preserve water resources for use in the dry season.
He added that trees would be planted along the canal banks and that his ministry would provide necessary funds to complete the remaining work during the upcoming dry season.
The minister also instructed officials to improve the aesthetic appearance of the canal, saying the government plans to select one model canal in each of 50 districts across the country as part of its development strategy.
He expressed hope that the Jalkadar canal in Banshkhali would be included among the selected model canals.
Local MP Md Zahirul Islam accompanied the minister during the canal inspection and relief distribution programme.
Deputy Commissioner Zahidul Islam Miah, Anwara Circle Assistant Police Superintendent Mahmudul Hasan, Banshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ruhul Amin, former Upazila BNP convener Master Lokman, local representatives and administrative officials were also present.
