Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that he showed no favouritism or bias during the appeal hearings filed against decisions made by returning officers.
He made the assertion on Sunday at the Election Commission office during a press briefing after concluding nine consecutive days of hearings.
“Furthermore,” he said, “We have also waived the requirement for independent candidates to have support from 1 per cent of voters. We want a fair election with everyone’s participation.”
The CEC said, “Many of you might criticise us. But we want a fair election with everyone’s participation. And that will not be possible without your cooperation.”
He added, “I can assure you that on my part and on my team’s part, favouritism did not factor into any of our decisions.”
He said, “You have inquired, and we have answered the inquiries; I am amazed to see this. Our scholars and clerics call this a debate. On behalf of the EC, I sincerely congratulate you. I hope to receive such cooperation from you in the future as well.”
Afterwards, Election Commissioner Abul Fazle Md Sanaullah said, “We have been forced to give leeway to loan defaulters, but we have done so with a heavy heart. But that could only happen due because the law permitted them.”
