Spain suffered another injury concern ahead of next month’s World Cup after Athletic Club winger Nico Williams limped off during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Valencia.
The 23-year-old left the pitch in the 36th minute after feeling discomfort in his muscle. Television cameras showed Williams shouting, “This cannot be happening,” as he headed towards the tunnel. His brother, Inaki Williams, replaced him.
Athletic later lost the match 1-0. The club will now carry out further medical tests before confirming the extent of the injury.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente already faces uncertainty over Lamine Yamal’s condition. Yamal has struggled with injury problems and doubts remain over his availability for the World Cup group stage.
Williams has played a major role in Spain’s attacking setup under De la Fuente. Spain rely heavily on quick wide players to stretch defences and create space in transition. Williams and Yamal usually provide that pace on opposite flanks.
The winger has scored six goals and supplied seven assists in 32 matches for Athletic this season. However, groin problems have interrupted parts of his campaign. He has also scored six goals in 30 appearances for Spain.
Spain open their World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on 15 June. They also face Peru in a friendly on 9 June. Athletic and Spain medical staff now face a race to prepare Williams in time for the tournament.
