The National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) has urged the people to directly report social media posts that incite terrorism or violence through WhatsApp and email to help prevent the misuse of digital platforms.
The agency said in a press release on Saturday that complaints received would undergo preliminary verification before being forwarded to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for reporting to the relevant platforms.
It clarified that the government does not have the authority to directly take down social media posts and can only report the violence-related content to platforms by presenting justified grounds.
The agency said hate speech that directly incites violence or calls for violent acts constitutes a punishable offence under the National Cyber Security Ordinance 2025.
The NCSA also called on citizens to refrain from using social media as a tool to fuel violence and to remain vigilant in safeguarding national security and the lives and property of people.
The agency also has written to the management of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, urging their stronger role in taking urgent actions to filter Bangladesh-related Facebook content that incites violence, disrupts the upcoming national election or encourages attacks on media organisations.
