The National Citizen Party (NCP) will announce candidates in 5,000 Union Parishads across the country by next November, the party’s Chief Organiser of northern region Sarjis Alam said on Monday.
Additionally, mayoral candidates for the remaining eight city corporations will be finalised by next September, he added.
Addressing a press conference at a port city hotel, following the party’s Chattogram metropolitan, north, and south district units’ organisational coordination meeting, Alam said that mayoral candidates have already been announced in five of the country’s 13 city corporations.
The remaining eight will be announced by next month.
Alam emphasised that the NCP’s presence as a ruling party is critical to serving the people in the “New Bangladesh.”
To achieve this, the party is actively working to strengthen its organisation at the grassroots level. He also alleged that Bangladeshi expatriates and remittance warriors are being harassed in various ways and are not being given their due respect.
Speaking at the press conference, NCP Central Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar launched a sharp attack on the current administration.
He claimed that within its first 180 days in power, the BNP government has shown itself to be trapped in political quicksand. Tushar also alleged that party cadres were allowed to run rampant under the guise of distributing “Family Cards.”
Declaring that the government’s “honeymoon period” is over, Tushar warned that the NCP would not hesitate to launch tougher street programmes, including strikes, if the government fails to control the prices of essentials immediately, reform the fragile economic framework, and stop politically patronised mob justice.
Earlier, the organisational coordination meeting discussed strategies to make the activities of the Chattogram North District NCP more dynamic and stronger. The leaders highlighted the importance of grassroots expansion, increasing coordination among responsible members, and executing future political programmes.
Presided over by Chattogram North District NCP Convenor Muhammad Ekramul Haq, the meeting was moderated by Member Secretary Abdul Karim Tipu and Joint Convenor Ali Newaz Imon.
Sarjis Alam attended the meeting as the chief guest, while central joint convenors Sarwar Tushar and Ali Ahsan Junaid, Central Joint Member Secretary Rifat Rashid, Chattogram Divisional Organisational Secretary ASM Suja Uddin, Central Joint Member Secretary Sagufta Bushra Mishma, Central Joint Organiser Jobairul Hasan Arif, and central Chhatra Shakti leader Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi were present as special guests.
Leaders of the Chattogram North District units of Chhatra Shakti, Jubo Shakti, and Shromik Shakti, along with various district committee members, also participated in the session.
