The National Citizen Party (NCP) Dhaka North unit has launched a tree distribution initiative along with a week-long environmental programme on World Environment Day.
Speaking at the event in front of the NCP’s temporary head office in the capital’s Banglamotor area on Saturday, NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said that while a political party might not have the capacity for massive projects, this initiative aims to generate public awareness about environmental issues.
Asif Mahmud strongly criticised the government’s environmental stance. Specifically mentioning the environment minister, he alleged that the minister is an individual who took steps to establish industries by destroying forest areas.
“From this, one can estimate what the state of the environment will be in the next five years,” he remarked.
The NCP spokesperson further asserted that the environment is not a priority in the government’s policy. Warning of future consequences, he said that if the current government does not act, it will lead to greater losses for whoever comes to power five years from now.
During the event, Asif Mahmud called for the implementation of effective measures for environmental conservation and emphasised the importance of increasing civic awareness to protect the environment.
