NCC Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Grameen Ashraful Centre (GAC) to support climate resilience in Bangladesh’s char areas, marking a significant step in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
The partnership will fund the “Adaptive Eco Char Project: A Blueprint for Thriving Dynamic Landscapes” in the Fulchhari upazila of Gaibandha, where the project will be implemented over two years.
The MoU was signed at NCC Bank’s headquarters, with the bank’s Managing Director, M Shamsul Arefin, and GAC’s CEO, M Abdus Salam, representing their respective organisations.
The project aims to enhance climate resilience and improve livelihoods for residents of char areas, which are highly vulnerable to climate-related risks. Key activities include setting up solar-powered digital resilience centres for disaster early warnings, digital healthcare through telemedicine, the installation of solar panels and safe water systems, and climate-resilient farming practices.
The project will also focus on increasing income through vegetable cultivation and livestock rearing, empowering women entrepreneurs, and improving disaster preparedness.
Shamsul Arefin said “This project is not just about financial development, but also about addressing basic needs like education, healthcare, and clean water for these vulnerable communities. We believe this initiative will help secure the future of families in char areas.”
Praising the partnership Abdus Salam said “This integrated char resilience model will help ensure long-term stability for marginalized communities, supporting environmental sustainability, better healthcare, and disaster resilience.”
The initiative is expected to provide safe water, energy, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities to thousands of families in Fulchhari, and aims to create a sustainable model that can be expanded to other climate-affected regions in the future.
