West Indies looked set to take control of the first session of the third day in the Mirpur Test, adding 79 runs to their overnight total. However, Nayeem Hasan struck late to pull things back for Bangladesh, leaving the visitors at 213/6 at lunch, still trailing by 59 runs in reply to the hosts’ 272.

Bangladesh had made an early breakthrough in the morning, with Shoriful Islam dismissing Tagenarine Chanderpaul to reduce West Indies to 176/5 at the drinks break.

Justin Greaves and captain Roston Chase then added 51 runs for the sixth wicket, with Chase surviving a chance when he was on 27. He edged Nayeem towards short leg, where Mominul Haque got his fingertips to the ball but could not hold on while off balance.

Nayeem eventually broke the partnership, trapping Greaves in front with a straight delivery. The right-hander missed the ball while attempting to play across the line and was struck on the pads. Following a loud appeal, the umpire raised his finger, and Greaves opted against a review. He walked back for 46 off 103 balls. Chase will resume at 30.

Shoriful provided the breakthrough in the 59th over, getting a delivery to nip back into the left-hander from a good length outside off. The dismissal ended a 65-run fifth-wicket stand between Chanderpaul and Greaves. Chanderpaul departed for 56 off 184 balls, hitting six fours and a six.

On the second day, bad light brought an early end to proceedings after Bangladesh were bowled out for 272, despite Shadman Islam completing his century. The Tigers lost their last seven wickets for just 59 runs.
