A police member was killed after a patrol vessel of the Naval Police collided with a bulkhead at the junction of the Shitalakshya and Dhaleshwari rivers in Narayanganj.
The incident took place on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Mohsin Sardar, 43.
Police said a team from the Kalagachhia Naval Police Outpost in Narayanganj, led by Sub-Inspector Mokbul Hossain, went out on a night patrol with four members for anti-dacoity operations.
During the patrol, the vessel collided with a bulkhead and capsized.
Team members managed to swim and climb onto a nearby bulkhead, but Mohsin Sardar sustained serious injuries.
He was quickly rescued and taken to Narayanganj Victoria General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Mohsin Sardar was attached to the Naval Police from Bagerhat. He hailed from Gopalpur village under Paikgachha Police Station in Khulna. He was the son of the late Abdul Karim Sardar.
He is survived by his elderly mother, wife, one son and one daughter. His son Siam is 14 years old, and his daughter Nishitha Akter Muni is 19.
Narayanganj Naval Police Headquarters Officer-in-Charge Rakibuzzaman confirmed the incident and said colleagues are deeply shocked by the death.
He said the body has been kept at Narayanganj General Hospital and legal procedures are underway.
