Chief Adviser and Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, has remarked that the upcoming national election will be a historic “grand festival” for the country, marking the beginning of a new journey.
He made these comments in his presidential address at a meeting of the National Consensus Commission held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Sunday. Representatives from various political parties attended the meeting to determine the legal basis and implementation process of the July Charter.
Dr Yunus said, “The national election will be held in the first half of February. This election is not just a political process but will be a grand celebration of the nation’s rebirth. If we can resolve the unresolved issues, this election will bring about a true new beginning for the country.”
He further noted, “After listening to your statements today, I am both amazed and inspired. The in-depth discussions and efforts toward resolution by the political parties have made me optimistic. When the idea of the Consensus Commission was first proposed, I was not sure if it would succeed. But today’s experience proves that we have found an effective way to resolve the crisis. This will serve as an example not only for Bangladesh but also for other countries. However, we must ensure that this example is not flawed.”
Emphasising the necessity of compromise, the chief adviser stated, “There is no turning back from the path of compromise we have begun. The only solution to the change initiated by the student-public movement is to build a new Bangladesh based on consensus. There may be arguments, but the solution lies here.”
He added, “To establish a new Bangladesh, we must walk the path of compromise. It may hurt some, but ultimately, peace will prevail for the nation. This opportunity will not come again; now is the time. If we fail to bring about change now, there will be no other chances left.”
Highlighting the importance of reforms, Dr. Yunus said, “The reason for implementing so many reforms is to ensure that autocracy never returns. Consensus on this matter is crucial. The festival will begin from here, and the election will be held in February.”
The Chief Adviser expressed hope that the election would maintain a peaceful and festive environment, paving the way for the country to move forward on a new journey.
