National Bank PLC has appointed Md Akhter Hossain as an Independent Director on its Board of Directors following approval from Bangladesh Bank under Sections 45 and 47(3) of the Bank Company Act, 1991, the bank said in a press release.
Bangladesh Bank approved the appointment on 24 June 2026. Akhter Hossain attended the 547th meeting of the Board of Directors of National Bank PLC on 30 April 2026 as the bank’s newly appointed Independent Director.
Akhter Hossain brings more than 37 years of experience in Bangladesh’s banking and financial sector. He began his career in 1988 as a Senior Officer at Agrani Bank PLC before serving in senior leadership roles at Mercantile Bank PLC, Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC and EXIM Bank PLC.
During his banking career, he served as Managing Director (Interim Charge) of EXIM Bank PLC and as Additional Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC. He also served as a Nominated Director of Shahjalal Islami Bank Securities Ltd.
According to the press release, he is recognised for his expertise in banking operations, treasury management, foreign trade, credit risk management, compliance and corporate governance, and has contributed to strengthening banking policies, regulatory compliance and institutional development.
Beyond the banking sector, Akhter Hossain has worked as a lecturer and regularly conducted training programmes for banking professionals. He has also served as an examiner and moderator for the Institute of Bankers Bangladesh.
He earned a BCom (Hons) and an MCom in Accounting from the University of Dhaka before completing an MBA at the University of Hull in the United Kingdom under the Bank of England Scholarship Programme. He is also an Associate of the Institute of Bankers Bangladesh.
The press release said he has participated in international training programmes, seminars and conferences in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, China, the United Arab Emirates, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and other countries.
