Former chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu has applied for the Bangladesh national team selector role as the Bangladesh Cricket Board begins the process to form a new selection panel.
BCB published a job notice last Sunday for the selector position. The board asked interested candidates to submit their applications by March 8. Since then, several former cricketers have shown interest in the role.
Nannu is among those who have already applied. He earlier served as the chief selector of Bangladesh and worked in the role for several years.
A number of former national players have also applied or are planning to apply. The list includes Elias Sunny, Naeem Islam, Tushar Imran, Nadif Chowdhury, Javed Omar Belim, and Mohammad Rafique. Some selectors who currently work with age group teams are also part of the race.
There are also a few new names in the mix. Shamsur Rahman Shuvo is among those interested in the position. Some other cricketers have also shown interest but did not want their names to be made public.
Habibul Bashar Sumon is also seen as a strong candidate for the chief selector role. However, he has not submitted his application yet. Whether he decides to apply or not only time will tell.
BCB has set clear conditions for the job. A candidate must have played at least 100 matches in first class and List A cricket combined. The board also wants people who have good judgment, strong skills, and good communication ability.
The selected candidates will get a two year term. Their job will be to pick players for the national team and the Bangladesh A team. They will also watch players who are in the pipeline.
Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu took charge as chief selector in February 2024 on a two year contract. His term will end in February. Former spinner Abdur Razzak also left the selection panel last October to take part in the BCB election.
Now the board wants to appoint two new selectors. One of them will take the role of chief selector.
