Opposition Chief Whip and Convener of NCP Nahid Islam has demanded that President Mohammed Sahabuddin be arrested and brought under legal scrutiny after his resignation. He also called for a honest, neutral, and parental figure to be appointed as the country’s new President.
Nahid made the remarks on Thursday evening at a rally held at Fouzdari More in Jamalpur following a march.
He alleged that the government is completely failing to implement reforms and fulfil the public mandate, which he said represents 70 per cent of the people.
According to him, due to a lack of international credibility and failure to advance reforms, no country in the world is providing the government with loans or assistance. He added that even Tarique Rahman returned from China empty-handed.
He warned that without establishing national unity, no foreign aid will be forthcoming.
Referring to the current political situation and the Presidency, he said, “The BNP, despite claiming to form a government with a two-thirds majority, has failed in five months to replace the Awami League-appointed President. A government that cannot remove one President, how will it change the country?”
Citing clear evidence of the President’s support for genocide and corruption, Nahid said, “It is not enough to make him resign; he must be arrested after resignation and brought under the law.”
A close source confirmed to TIMES of Bangladesh that the President could resign on health grounds.
