A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar shortly after midnight, with tremors also felt in parts of Bangladesh, particularly in several areas of Chattogram.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake hit at 1:36am Bangladesh time early Sunday.
The agency said the quake originated at a depth of around 10 kilometres beneath the surface. Its preliminary epicentre was located at 20.46 degrees north latitude and 93.94 degrees east longitude.
The tremors were also experienced in Bangladesh’s south-eastern region. Residents in several parts of Chattogram city said houses shook suddenly for a few seconds, prompting many people to rush outside in panic.
