Neymar has confirmed his retirement from international football, ending a Brazil career that lasted more than 16 years. The 34-year-old announced his decision after Santos beat Universidad Central 4-2 in the Copa Sudamericana and ended speculation over his future with the national team.
The Brazil forward said he had reached the end of his journey after making his final appearance in the World Cup last-16 defeat to Norway.
“My time with the national team is over. I made history, I was very happy, I gave my blood, my life, I always fought for the yellow jersey, but now I don’t want to anymore,” Neymar said.
Neymar leaves as Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer after representing the country at four World Cups, Copa América tournaments and the Olympic Games. His final international appearance came during Brazil’s World Cup exit after Norway won 2-1.
Attention now turns to his club future with Santos. Neymar also addressed reports that claimed he criticised and intimidated younger teammates following a recent league match.
“It is sad and annoying, but it is not my fault. These stories reach a lot of people,” he said.
“I spoke after the match, demanded better, and said we could not afford to be so careless. You cannot give away a draw like that. As captain, I have every right to say that. Lucas Verissimo and Gabigol also spoke to the players.”
Neymar helped Santos secure a 4-2 win over Universidad Central, sending the Brazilian club into the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, where they will face Macará.
