Teachers and employees of MPO-listed private educational institutions have reiterated their vow to continue their countrywide strike until their three main demands are met. These include a 20% increase in basic salary, along with higher housing and medical allowances.
The teachers also condemned police violence during a rally at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, teachers and employees from private educational institutions across the country gathered at the National Press Club to demand nationalisation of jobs, housing allowances, medical benefits, and festival bonuses.
The rally was disrupted at around 1:50pm when police forcefully dispersed the demonstrators. The police used batons, water cannons, and sound grenades, resulting in several injuries.
After the use of water cannons and sound grenades forced the teachers to disperse, police continued to charge them with batons. Despite this, the teachers regrouped multiple times on the road and resumed their protests, chanting slogans.
Later, the teachers announced that they would move from the Press Club to Shaheed Minar. Led by their leaders, a group of protesters marched towards the iconic site. They pledged to continue their sit-in there until their demands are met, with a clear statement from the government.
Teacher leaders also made it clear that their strike would continue until a formal order is issued to fulfill their demands.
