Saiful Alam Khan Milon, a lawmaker from Jamaat-e-Islami, has alleged that Tk 2-3 crore is extorted daily at Karwan Bazar, one of the capital’s largest wholesale markets.

The MP raised the allegation on Monday during a budget dialogue organised by a citizen platform in Dhaka. Notably, Karwan Bazar falls within the parliamentary constituency of Saiful Alam Khan Milon.

Milon specified that the chicken wholesale sheds alone account for Tk 60 lakh in monthly extortion. He maintained that the burden of this illegal collection is ultimately shifted onto general consumers. During the session, he demanded an end to extortion at both Karwan Bazar and the Mohakhali bus stand.

The MP further claimed that police do not even record cases against such extortion. He informed the audience that he has already apprised the Home Minister of the situation. Milon added that he is prepared to approach the Prime Minister regarding the matter if necessary.
