Businessmen and industrialists in Narayanganj’s Fatullah Union on Tuesday evening besieged NCP’s Abdullah Al Amin, after he termed the President of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Mohammad Hatem, a “crony of the fascist”.
The incident took place during an iftar mahfil organised by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in the BSCIC industrial area of the union.
According to witnesses, both Abdullah Al Amin and Mohammad Hatem were invited as guests to the programme.
However, the MP reportedly refused to take his seat on the stage after noticing the presence of the BKMEA president.
“I will not sit on the same stage with a ‘crony of the fascist’,” said NCP Member of Parliament Abdullah Al Amin while addressing the gathering.
Following the remark, Mohammad Hatem left the venue.
His followers later gathered at the event site and besieged the MP, staging protests that lasted for about an hour.
Police were deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control.
Fatullah Police Station Inspector Anwar Hossain said law enforcers quickly reached the spot and dispersed the protesters.
He said the situation later returned to normal.
