Police have recovered the bodies of a man, his wife, and their four-year-old child from a flat in Baburail Bou Bazar area of Narayanganj city on Monday evening.
The deceased were identified as Habibullah Shiplu, 35, his wife Mohini Akhter Mim, 28, and their child Afran, 4. Shiplu hailed from Dabiran area in Daudkandi upazila, Cumilla.
According to police sources, the family had been living in a rented apartment on the fourth floor of a seven-storey building owned by Palash Bhuiyan in Bou Bazar.
Preliminary investigation suggests the incident took place either on Sunday night or Monday afternoon.
Police suspect Shiplu killed his wife and child before hanging himself from a ceiling fan in an adjacent room.
Shiplu had worked as a manager at “Ramzan Samity,” a cooperative that was shut down during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sources said several depositors had dues with the cooperative.
Additional Superintendent of Police in Narayanganj, Tarek Al Mehedi, said
“The door was locked from inside, which indicates that Shiplu murdered his wife and child before taking his own life. The exact cause will be confirmed after the postmortem examination.”
