An activist of Jatiotabadi Swecchasebak Dal was stabbed to death in the capital’s Sadarghat area on Saturday evening. The deceased, identified as Mohammad Mitul, was employed as a labourer at a garment factory located on the 14th floor of East Bengal Market.
According to colleagues and eyewitnesses, the incident stems from an altercation on Thursday regarding extortion, as well as the consumption and sale of marijuana in the East Bengal Market area.
Following this dispute, followers of Ahmed Abdus Sobhan, the joint convener of the Kotwali Thana Jubo Dal, reportedly launched an attack on Mitul at approximately 7:30pm on Saturday.
The attackers, allegedly acting on the instructions of Sobhan, stabbed Mitul in the chest with a sharp pair of scissors. He was rescued in a critical condition and rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Several other individuals were also injured during the incident.
Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Matiur Rahman told TIMES of Bangladesh that the death was caused by an attack with tailor’s scissors resulting from previous enmity. Matiur added that the police are yet to confirm the victim’s political affiliation.
Immediately following the attack, local businessmen at the market detained 10 suspects and handed them over to the Sutrapur Police. The OC confirmed that the detained individuals are currently being interrogated.
Mitul’s body is being held at the Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Legal proceedings and the filing of a case are currently underway.
