Dhaka Nattyautshab 2026, an eight-day theatre festival celebrating the capital’s 416-year heritage, began yesterday at the Zahir Raihan Cultural Centre in Sutrapur, Old Dhaka.
Organised by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the festival features eight theatre productions, with most exploring the history, heritage and culture of Old Dhaka.
The event is part of the month-long “Hridoye Dhaka 416” celebrations.
DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest, while Dhaka-7 MP Hamidur Rahman joined as the special guest.
Festival organiser Khandaker Shah Alam also addressed the event, which was chaired by DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Khaybar Rahman.
Speaking at the inauguration, Abdus Salam highlighted the role of cultural activities in shaping young people and strengthening social values.
“There is no alternative to cultural activities to prevent societal degradation and keep the young generation on the right path,” he said, adding that drama, music, literature and sports can help nurture patriotism and positive values.
He also recalled a time when Dhaka had numerous libraries where children became members and regularly participated in cultural activities, which he said helped develop leadership qualities among young people.
Granthik Theatre Group opened the festival with Girgiti, written and directed by Matiur Rahman Rana.
The festival will feature productions including Antarale Ayna, Rangila Fanus, Bhelki, Champabati, Shasti and Shayesta Khan’r Pori.
Cultural performances will also be held at the venue every evening throughout the festival.
Dhaka Nattyautshab 2026 will conclude on 23 August, bringing together theatre, music and cultural performances to celebrate the heritage of Old Dhaka.
