Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed the $2 billion mark worldwide, extending its extraordinary run at the global box office while holding firmly to the top spot in North America.
According to NBC News, the Sony Pictures release added $70 million from cinemas in the US and Canada over the weekend. That lifted its domestic total to $785.8 million, making it the fourth-highest-grossing domestic release ever. Overseas earnings of $118.7 million pushed the global total beyond $2 billion. The film became only the eighth movie to reach the milestone without adjusting for inflation and the second-fastest to do so. Avengers: Endgame reached it in 11 days in 2019, while Brand New Day took about 18 days.
Two dinosaur-themed films fought for the remaining top spots, but neither came close to challenging Spider-Man. The Odyssey stayed second with $23.2 million in its fifth weekend, taking its domestic total to $504.7 million. With $98 million internationally, including $36.6 million from its opening days in China, Christopher Nolan’s epic has now grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide.
The End of Oak Street narrowly took third with about $21 million from 3,446 cinemas. It added $26 million internationally for a $47 million global opening against an $80 million reported production budget.
Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film stars Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway as suburban parents in 1982 whose neighbourhood is mysteriously transported to prehistoric times. Critics have responded positively, giving it 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences awarded it a B CinemaScore. PostTrak polls found just over half of opening-weekend viewers would definitely recommend it.
Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie opened fourth with $20.5 million from 3,545 cinemas in the US and Canada. Paramount’s family film received an A CinemaScore and has earned $69 million worldwide.
Katseye: Wild Hearts rounded out the top five with $4 million from 724 screens. Six: The Musical Live opened sixth with $3 million, followed by The Brink of War with $2.7 million. Tamil-language romance Vishwanath & Sons earned $1.6 million to finish 10th.
Matthew McConaughey’s crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King opened outside the top 10 with just over $1 million from 632 cinemas. The Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony earned $706,676 from 37 cinemas in its second weekend. The A24 film will expand further in the coming weeks.
The strong box office has continued beyond the summer season, which has generated more than $4.2 billion in ticket sales. That is about 5.7% ahead of the pre-pandemic summer of 2019.
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, said the figure sits about $130 million below the record 2013 summer, which was led by Iron Man 3 and Despicable Me 2. He predicted the current summer would rank among the five strongest ever.
The year-to-date box office stands just below $6.9 billion.
