Mohammedan Sporting Club reached the Federation Cup final after a 2-1 win over Brothers Union in the second qualifier at Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla on Tuesday. Sourav Dewan scored twice, including the winner in stoppage time, to send Mohammedan into their third Federation Cup final in four years.
Neither side challenged seriously for the league title this season, so both clubs targeted the cup competition to finish strongly. Mohammedan took control in the 38th minute through Sourov. Rahmat Mia launched a long throw into the box, Emmanuel Eli Keke flicked the ball on with a header, and Sourov guided his own header past the goalkeeper.
Brothers pushed harder after the break and nearly equalised in the 49th minute. Alamgir Gazi struck a volley from inside the area, but Mohammedan goalkeeper Sujon Hossain reacted quickly and pushed the ball away.
Brothers finally found the equaliser in the 72nd minute after Alamgir won a free-kick outside the penalty area. Captain Jamal Bhuyan curled the set-piece into the top corner to level the score at 1-1.
The match looked set for extra time, but Mohammedan struck again in added time. Muzaffar Muzaffarov swung in a corner, the ball dropped inside a crowded box, and Sourov smashed a volley into the net from close range.
Tensions rose after the final whistle. Players from both teams became involved in a scuffle, and Muzaffarov suffered a cut to his face during the incident.
Mohammedan will now face Bashundhara Kings in the final on 19 May at Bashundhara Kings Arena. Kings booked their place earlier with a 4-0 win over Brothers in the first qualifier and will enter the final as defending champions.
