Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty is set to collaborate with acclaimed Bengali filmmakers Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy for the first time, with the new film scheduled to arrive next year.

The announcement comes shortly after Mithun recovered from hand surgery and returned home from hospital.

The actor is reportedly doing well.

The film will be part of Windows Production’s celebrations marking its 25th anniversary next year.

Director Shiboprosad Mukherjee confirmed the news on Tuesday (11 August), sharing a photograph with Mithun and expressing his excitement about finally working with the veteran star.

“Yes, finally we are working together. Nandita di, Mithun Chakraborty and I,” Shiboprosad wrote on social media.

For Shiboprosad, the collaboration fulfils a long-held dream.

He said he grew up watching Mithun on screen and was particularly influenced by films such as Agneepath, Disco Dancer, Do Anjaane and Dance Dance.

“Everyone has certain dreams. I had one too—to work with Mithun Chakraborty someday. I grew up watching him on screen,” the filmmaker wrote.

Shiboprosad said Mithun’s career in Bengali cinema also repeatedly reminded audiences that an actor cannot be confined by language or geographical boundaries.

“To me, he has been more than just a star since childhood. He has always been a remarkable wonder. For me, he is Ramakrishna, Mrigaya and Disco Dancer,” he said.

The filmmaker also recalled meeting Mithun to narrate the script personally.

According to Shiboprosad, the actor’s reaction made the moment particularly memorable.

“Some waits are perhaps meant for the right story. The day I met him and narrated the story, a part of the child I once was was still sitting quietly somewhere inside me. As soon as I finished, Mithunda shook my hand and said, ‘You’ve nailed it! This is the story of my life,’” he recalled.

Shiboprosad had first contacted Mithun while he was in the United States.

He introduced himself through a voice note, after which the veteran actor immediately called him back.

“Mithun-da called back and said, ‘Shibu! Why are you giving such a long introduction by calling yourself Shiboprosad? I am sitting here waiting to work!’” the director recalled.

Mithun has maintained a strong connection with Bengali cinema despite establishing himself as a major Bollywood star.

He has continued to work in Bengali films alongside his Hindi projects.

Shiboprosad said the upcoming collaboration is now only a few days away from becoming a reality.

“Sometimes a few words can touch a dream that has lasted for years. That moment was exactly like that for me. Just a few more days to wait, and a long-held dream will finally become reality,” he said.
