The body of a 34-year-old imam, who went missing while bathing in the Dakatia River, was recovered on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Al-Amin Orphanage superintendent and local mosque imam Mufti Md Shamsuddin. He was a resident of Waruk Alipur village in Shahraasti upazila, said Al-Amin Orphanage Complex management board president Maulana Abdur Rahman Gazi.

The incident began on Saturday afternoon when he went to the river beside the orphanage to bathe after Zuhr prayers. Concern grew when he did not return by Asr, prompting a search by orphanage staff and students.

The orphanage cook Elias later found his shoes, soap, lungi, towel and vest on the riverbank.

A diving team from Chandpur Naval Fire Station launched a search operation from 5:30pm to around 7:30pm on Saturday, said Chandpur Naval Fire Station Officer Md Rakibul Islam.

The search ended on Sunday afternoon after locals spotted the body floating slightly east of the original location.

A naval fire service team recovered the body and brought it back to the orphanage.

The funeral prayer was held in front of the orphanage after completing legal formalities, and the body was handed over to the family, said Maulana Abdur Rahman Gazi.

The family did not file any complaint over the incident, he added.
