Michael Edwards has stepped down as chief executive officer of football at Fenway Sports Group, the owners of Premier League champions Liverpool.
FSG said the move was planned. Edwards leaves after helping guide a major period of change at the club since returning in March 2024.
“It has been a privilege to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such an important moment,” Edwards said.
“I leave believing Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding people, a clear direction and the foundations in place for continued success.”
Edwards first joined Liverpool in 2011 as performance director. He became sporting director in 2016 and played a key role in building the squad that won the club’s first English league title in 30 years during the 2019 20 season.
He left the club in 2022 but returned two years later as FSG’s chief executive officer of football. He oversaw football operations during the club’s transition after long serving manager Jurgen Klopp left.
During his second spell, Liverpool introduced a new football leadership structure. The club also appointed Arne Slot as Klopp’s successor in June 2024.
Slot guided Liverpool to their 20th English league title in 2025. However, he left after a difficult second season and was replaced by Andoni Iraola in June this year.
FSG have not yet announced who will replace Edwards.
