Hollywood actor Meryl Streep has said she is glad to represent older women in leading roles as she prepares for the release of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’.

The 20th Century Studios sequel to the 2006 hit reunites Streep with Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, who will reprise their original roles.

Speaking ahead of the film’s release, Streep reflected on the lack of substantial roles for older women in the industry, saying women over 50 often “disappear into the woodwork” and see their influence and visibility diminish.

In comments shared by The Associated Press, the Oscar-winning actor said it is unusual to see women in their 70s playing such prominent roles on screen, adding that she is “happy to represent” that demographic.

Streep, known for acclaimed performances in films including ‘Kramer vs Kramer’ and ‘Out of Africa’, noted that older women are often overlooked in popular culture, with their perspectives and presence less frequently highlighted.

The original ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ followed aspiring journalist Andy Sachs as she enters the demanding world of a high-fashion magazine, working under formidable editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, played by Streep.

The sequel, directed by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna, will continue Priestly’s story as she navigates the changing media landscape, including the decline of traditional print publishing.

The film is scheduled for release on May 1 and also stars Stanley Tucci.
