A colourful rally and workers’ gathering were held in Noakhali on Friday marking International Workers’ Day.
The programme was organised by Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation Noakhali town and Sadar upazila units and began around 9:30am.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Noakhali district Ameer Ishaq Khandakar attended the event as chief guest.
“Even after 54 years of independence, workers in Bangladesh are yet to secure their rightful entitlements,” said Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Noakhali district Ameer Ishaq Khandakar.
“The right to claim those entitlements lies with workers themselves, and no one will grant it voluntarily,” he said.
“Governments have changed repeatedly, but the condition of workers has not improved,” he said.
He said workers had sacrificed their lives to establish rights, but the expected outcomes remain unrealised.
Others who spoke included Noakhali district Sramik Kalyan Federation town unit President Advocate Zahirul Islam and Town President Mahbubul Rahman Riyad.
The rally began from the municipal market and paraded through key roads before ending in front of Sudharam Police Station.
Similar rallies and discussions were also held in different upazilas of the district organised by various labour groups.
