Four high-profile political figures, including former ministers Rashed Khan Menon and Golam Dastagir Gazi, have been shown arrested in a case filed over a murder during the July mass uprising in the capital.
Other accused in the case are former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam, and former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadekur Rahman issued the order on Wednesday after police produced the accused before the court and pleaded to show them arrested in the murder case filed with the Banani Police Station.
Following the hearing, the court directed that the four be returned to jail custody.
According to the case statement, on 19 July, 2024, a man named Md Shahjahan participated in a protest rally in Mohakhali Flyover area of the capital.
During that time, alleged members of the ruling Awami League and its affiliated organisations carried out attack on the rally.
Shahjahan sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen during the attack. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died four days later.
The case was filed months later by Shahjahan’s mother, Sajeda Begum, with the Banani Police Station on 18 December, 2024.
