Marc Marquez completed one of the most remarkable comebacks in MotoGP history by winning his seventh world championship, drawing level with Italian legend Valentino Rossi.
The 32-year-old Spaniard sealed the title after finishing second at the Japan Grand Prix in Motegi, just behind his Ducati team-mate Francesco Bagnaia. With five races still remaining in the season, Marquez has built an unassailable lead in the championship standings.
As he crossed the finish line, Marquez was visibly emotional, holding his head in his hands and sobbing on his bike. He was soon joined by his brother Alex, who finished sixth in the race and is currently second in the championship standings, 201 points behind.
“It’s impossible even to speak, I just want to enjoy the moment, but it’s true that it was difficult, it was super difficult, but now I’m at peace with myself,” a tearful Marquez said after the race.
This latest title marks Marquez’s first since 2019 and follows a turbulent period that began in 2020. After dominating the sport with four consecutive championships between 2016 and 2019, he suffered a broken arm in 2020 that required four operations over the next two years.
The following seasons were plagued by serious injuries and crashes. In 2023, after 11 years with Honda, Marquez made the bold decision to switch to Ducati.
Reflecting on his journey, he admitted, “I did a big mistake in my career, to come back too early from surgery. And then I fight, fight, fight, and I won again. So I’m at peace.”
With 11 wins this season, Marquez has firmly reasserted his place at the top of the sport, capping off a return that few thought possible.
