Three people lost their lives and three more were wounded during a confrontation between law enforcement and members of Jumma Chhatra Janata in Guimara upazila, Khagrachhari, this evening. The altercation occurred during a demonstration concerning the alleged sexual assault of a female student.
Deputy Inspector General of Chattogram Range Police Ahsan Habib Palash confirmed the incident. He said the bodies have been kept at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.
On September 23, a Marma school girl was allegedly gang raped, while returning home from private tuition at around 9pm. The victim’s father filed a case the following day with Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station against three unidentified men.
So far, police have arrested one suspect, Shoyon Shil, who was placed on a six-day remand by a court.
Home Ministry expresses ‘deep sorrow’
The Ministry of Home Affairs has expressed deep sorrow over the incident in Guimara Upazila of Khagrachhari district, where three hill people were killed in an attack.
The ministry issued a statement regarding the incident on Sunday.
The attack also left 13 army personnel, including a major, the officer-in-charge of Guimara police station, three other police officers, and several others injured.
The ministry assured that those involved in the incident will be promptly investigated and brought to justice. and that no criminal will be spared.
Meanwhile, the ministry urged all concerned to remain patient and maintain peace until further notice.
