Argentina have made a late change to their squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Coach Lionel Scaloni has called up Marcos Senesi after Leonardo Balerdi suffered an injury.

The 29 year old defender is expected to join Argentina’s training camp in Kansas in the coming hours. He will begin preparations with the team before their opening match against Algeria on June 17.

Senesi was born in Concordia, Entre Rios, and came through the youth system at San Lorenzo. The left footed centre back has built a strong career in Europe and enjoyed an impressive season with Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Despite his good form, Senesi did not make Scaloni’s original 26 man squad for the World Cup. His hopes of playing in the tournament looked over when the final squad was announced.

However, Balerdi’s injury has now given him a chance. Scaloni moved quickly to bring in the experienced defender as Argentina continue their preparations for the tournament.

Senesi will now compete for a place in the team as the defending world champions aim for another strong World Cup campaign.
