A man was shot to death in broad daylight in front of Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital in the capital’s Sutrapur area on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Tarik Saif Mamun, 55, a businessman. He was a former president of the Dhanmondi unit of Jubo Dal.

He was also an accused in two cases filed over killing Saeed Ahmed Tipu, brother of former army chief Aziz Ahmed, and film actor Sohel Chowdhury. However, he was acquitted in Sohel Chowdhury murder case last year.

His family said Mamun had gone to appear before a court in connection with another case, according to media reports.

Malik Ahsan Uddin Sami, deputy commissioner of the Lalbagh Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told media that Mamun was a top criminal.

Md Faruk, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed the death, citing the doctors’ statement.

Mohibullah, ward master of Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital, said a shooting incident took place in front of the hospital around 11am.

Upon hearing the sound, he and others went to the road shortly afterward and found a man lying in a pool of blood.

They immediately rescued him and took him to their hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was quickly transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors examined him and declared him dead, Mohibullah told TIMES of Bangladesh.

Faizul Haque Apu, an acquaintance of the deceased, said he had previously met Mamun in Gazipur. In the morning, he received a call from the victim’s phone informing him of the incident. He then came to Dhaka Medical College from Kakrail and identified the deceased, he added.

Meanwhile, the victim’s National ID card revealed that his father’s name was SM Iqbal, and their home was in the Mobarak Colony area under Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.
