A 25-year-old man, Matiur Rahman, sustained severe burns to his face, hands, and limbs in a blast while allegedly attempting to make a cocktail bomb at his home in Nilfa Bazar, Tungipara Upazila, Gopalganj.
The incident occurred on Monday evening, 23 March, at his residence, confirmed Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Muhammad Sarwar Hossain.
Local sources said Matiur was preparing the explosive device at home when it suddenly detonated.
He was rushed to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital by residents. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, doctors transferred him to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where he remains under police supervision.
Family members claimed that the explosion occurred while he was making fireworks for a wedding ceremony.
However, medical professionals noted that the nature of his injuries did not align with typical firework explosions.
Asim Kumar Dhar, a physician at Gopalganj Medical College Hospital, said, “Based on the injuries, this does not appear to be caused by fireworks. The wound patterns suggest a cocktail or hand grenade blast, but specialists can confirm this.”
Additional Superintendent of Police Muhammad Sarwar Hossain added that law enforcement has launched a formal investigation into the incident.
