A 35-year-old man died after being beaten by a mob in Dhaka’s Shyampur area over allegations of stealing rods from a Bangladesh Regional Waterway Transport (BIWTA) project.

The victim has been identified as Abdur Rahim.

The incident occurred around 10:30pm on Sunday inside the new BIWTA project near the Shyampur’s Postogola Crematorium.

Locals caught Rahim while he was allegedly attempting to steal rods and administered a severe beating. He was later rescued by Shyampur police and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Abdur Rahim succumbed to his injuries early Monday at around 5:30am, police confirmed.

Sub-Inspector Md Shah Alam of Shyampur Police Station said authorities are still verifying Rahim’s detailed identity.

His body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the involvement of the mob.
