A man has been beaten to death allegedly by a mob on suspicion of being a thief at Bamundi Bazar in Gangni, Meherpur on Tuesday morning.
Gangni Police Station’s Officer-in-charge (OC) Uttam Kumar Das confirmed the death. Police are yet to confirm his identity.
According to locals, a group of five or six unidentified individuals were at Tushar Tower House in Bamundi Bazar. They were removing tyres from the shop and loading them onto a pickup truck parked on the road.
When the shop owner noticed the activity and raised an alarm, locals gathered at the scene. While the others escaped, one man was caught.
He was tied with ropes and severely beaten, then left in a critical condition beside the shop, where he succumbed to his injuries.
OC Uttam said the police are present at the scene and the body was sent to Meherpur General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
