A man was reportedly beaten to death by locals in Barguna Sadar upazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Hossain Kalu alias “Bosti Kalu.”
The incident took place around 5pm on Friday in Patakata village after Kalu reportedly hacked and critically injured a local Union Parishad (UP) representative.
According to police and local sources, Kalu, a known criminal and drug trader in the area, was released on bail from jail on Wednesday and allegedly continued criminal activities in the locality.
He reportedly attacked Golam Mostofa, a panel chairman of Badarkhali Union Parishad, after he protested his activities, leaving him critically injured.
Following the attack, enraged villagers chased Kalu and his associates.
He was later beaten to death in a mob attack. One of his associates, Towhid, was also seriously injured.
Barguna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Alim said police recovered the body in the evening and sent it to Barguna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The injured was initially admitted to the hospital and later referred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
He added that additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, and operations are underway to detain those involved in the incident.
Police said Kalu had 14 cases filed against him in different parts of the country.
