A Bangladeshi national residing in Malaysia has been handed over to the United States to face charges in connection with a large-scale online child sexual exploitation case, following close collaboration between Malaysian and US authorities.
US Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska announced on Thursday that Zobaidul Amin, 28, was transferred to Alaska from Malaysia by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Wednesday, with Malaysian authorities smoothing the way for the process.
According to the office, Amin appeared before the US District Court for the District of Alaska on Thursday for his initial hearing.
FBI Director Kashyap Pramod Patel took to his X account to voice his gratitude to the Malaysian government.
He said, “Thank you to Legat Kuala Lumpur, the government of Malaysia, and our great local partners all over the country who assisted with the investigation and arrest.”
Court records indicate Amin had been living in Malaysia and pursuing medical education before his arrest.
US authorities disclosed that Malaysian law enforcement agencies had been coordinating closely with the FBI and the US Department of Justice since September 2022 throughout the investigation.
During the timeframe, Malaysia’s Attorney General’s Chambers had slapped Amin with 13 counts connected to the possession and production of child pornography.
US Attorney for the District of Alaska Michael J Heyman emphasised that the suspect’s handover showcased robust international law enforcement collaboration.
He remarked in the statement, “The impact of this case is that of international magnitude. It stands as one of the most prolific cases of alleged online child exploitation the US has ever seen.”
Heyman also extended appreciation to the Malaysian government and its enforcement bodies for their partnership in facilitating Amin’s transfer to the US.
Court documents alleged that Amin weaponised social media platforms, including Instagram and Snapchat, to pinpoint and manipulate minor victims into generating sexually explicit images and videos.
Authorities claim the alleged misconduct involved hundreds of underage victims spanning Alaska, other parts of the US, and nations abroad.
Amin is confronted with several charges, including conspiracy to produce child pornography, conspiracy to receive and distribute child pornography, child exploitation enterprise, cyberstalking, aggravated identity theft, and wire fraud.
If he is found guilty, his punishment could range from 20 years behind bars to life imprisonment.
Amin was initially arrested in Malaysia on 19 September 2022, following a joint inquiry by the FBI and the Royal Malaysia Police. He was later hauled before the Sessions Court in Seremban on multiple counts under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, covering the production and possession of child sexual abuse material.
At the time, Amin – then a 24-year-old Bangladeshi medical student enrolled at a private university – entered a plea of not guilty to the allegations. The charges stemmed from the alleged creation of explicit images and videos via the Snapchat application and the storage of hundreds of digital files unearthed on electronic devices.
