Kobbie Mainoo wrote himself into Old Trafford folklore on Sunday, striking the winner in a breathless 3-2 victory over Liverpool that secured Manchester United’s place in next season’s Champions League and completed a first league double over their fiercest rivals in a decade.
Michael Carrick’s side were ferocious from the first whistle, and their intensity was rewarded inside the opening quarter of an hour with two goals that left Liverpool stunned.
The opener came with a touch of fortune. Matheus Cunha needed two attempts to get his shot away, but when his deflected left-footed strike nestled into the corner, United’s bright start had its deserved reward.
The second arrived before the quarter-hour mark. Benjamin Sesko was initially denied from point-blank range by Freddie Woodman, but when Bruno Fernandes’ header cannoned back off the goalkeeper, Sesko was perfectly positioned to poke the ball over the line. Cody Gakpo curled an effort inches wide for Liverpool in response, and Fernandes went close to adding a third with a half-volley that whistled just past the post, but the hosts went into the interval two goals to the good.
Liverpool were fortunate not to be further behind, with Ryan Gravenberch’s late first-half effort the only moment of genuine threat from Arne Slot’s side in a dismal opening 45 minutes.
The second half told an entirely different story. Liverpool began it in perfect fashion, with Dominik Szoboszlai capitalising on a careless giveaway from half-time substitute Amad Diallo, carrying the ball half the length of the pitch before coolly slotting into the bottom corner.
The comeback was complete just 10 minutes into the second half, though again United were the architects of their own misfortune. Senne Lammens played a loose pass straight to Alexis Mac Allister, and Szoboszlai’s quick thinking teed up Gakpo to tap into an empty net. An unthinkable turnaround had been completed.
With the game seemingly slipping away, United dug deep. Luke Shaw’s cross was only half cleared by Liverpool, and Mainoo strode onto Mac Allister’s weak clearance on the edge of the area to sweep a composed finish into the bottom corner in front of a delirious Stretford End.
Liverpool pushed desperately for an equaliser in the closing stages, with Gakpo testing Lammens once more, but United held firm to claim three points that meant everything.
The victory secured United’s place in the top five and next season’s Champions League, a remarkable turnaround from the position Carrick inherited when he took charge in January. It was also the perfect audition for the permanent managerial role, with United having accumulated more points than any other side since his arrival.
Liverpool’s defeat, while damaging to their pride, is unlikely to derail their own Champions League push. They retain a six-point cushion with three games remaining, and qualification remains firmly in their own hands.
