Locals of Mollakandi village in Shibchar upazila in Madaripur have transformed their locality into a sea of blue and white, decorating a one-kilometre stretch of road with banners, flags, and posters of Argentine football stars to express their unwavering support for the team.
The festive atmosphere has turned the village into a local attraction, drawing visitors every day to witness roads lined with Argentina’s flag and portraits of favourite players, particularly Lionel Messi.
According to 22-year-old local youth Rony, the football craze has so dramatically changed the appearance of the village that many people now refer to it as “Argentina Village”.
The enthusiasm extends across generations. Children, teenagers, and elderly people are all taking part in processions and festivities, while billboards have been erected at various intersections to mark the occasion.
For many supporters, the excitement surrounding this World Cup carries special significance. Md Al Amin, an Argentina fan, said he hopes the team will once again lift the trophy.
“Our expectation is that Argentina will win the World Cup again, just as they did previously. Since this is Messi’s final World Cup, the excitement is even greater this time,” he said.
Like many others in the village, he believes Argentina will secure the 2026 World Cup title. Amid the overwhelming support for Argentina, one local stands out.
Khalid Hasan, the village’s lone Brazil supporter, remains comfortable despite being surrounded by Argentina fans. “Even though I am the only supporter of a different team in this village, I watch the games and celebrate with everyone else. We do not engage in provocative talk, and I enjoy the harmony,” he said.
The colourful display has also attracted the attention of commuters passing through the area.
Nur Nahar Begum, a regular traveller along the road, said the large number of banners and photographs reflects the community’s deep-rooted passion for football.
Mollakandi village continues to celebrate the sport in its own unique way, turning a quiet stretch of road into a vibrant showcase of football enthusiasm.
