A Madaripur man has been killed while fighting for the Russian army in the ongoing war against Ukraine.
The deceased, Suruj Kazi, 35, son of Shahabuddin Kazi from South Khagachhara area under Madaripur Sadar upazila, died on Monday in a mine explosion during combat.
His family confirmed the death on Thursday evening.
Family members said Suruj left Bangladesh around eight to nine months ago through a broker in search of better opportunities with hopes of reaching Europe. After failing to secure a visa, he travelled to Russia through an agency.
He initially worked in a company with a monthly salary of Tk80,000. Later, he was allegedly recruited by brokers to join the Russian forces in the Ukraine war for higher pay.
He reportedly worked as a cook at a military camp before being killed in a mine explosion.
The family said the death was initially kept secret. Later, two Bangladeshi expatriates in Russia informed them over phone.
Suruj was the eldest of three brothers and one sister. His father, Shahabuddin Kazi, demanded the return of his son’s body and action against those involved in sending him to the war zone.
The family also said Suruj’s two-year-old son died three months ago from a cold-related illness.
His wife, Sumaia Akter, 22, has now lost both husband and child.
News of his death spread in the village, drawing relatives and locals to the family home where mourning continues.
Madaripur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wadia Shabab said the administration would assist in bringing the body back if contacted by the family.
Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Kalam Azad said police learned about the death through relatives and would investigate if a complaint is filed.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Al Noman said necessary steps would be taken to repatriate the body.
