Lutfur Rahman Badal withdraws from BCB election

The upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election has become increasingly complex following another unexpected withdrawal. On Friday, 4 October, Lutfur Rahman Badal, chairman of the Legends of Rupganj Club, announced he was stepping back from the race. Earlier in the day, he had expressed optimism about contesting the election, but by late night, he reversed his decision.

The deadline for withdrawals had already passed on Wednesday, 2 October, at noon. As a result, while Badal’s name will remain on official documents, he will not participate in the election.

In his statement, Badal said, “I, Lutfur Rahman Badal, chairman of Legends of Rupganj, am withdrawing myself from the upcoming BCB election. I am not pointing fingers at anyone. If circumstances become favourable in the near future, I will explain why and under what conditions I was compelled to make this decision.”

He added, “I do not wish to engage in mudslinging. I extend my best wishes to those elected as directors. However, I must say that if the election had been conducted across multiple panels, it would have been a milestone. Thanks to everyone who stood by me throughout.”

Badal’s withdrawal follows a series of exits just two days earlier, when 16 other candidates, including Tamim Iqbal, pulled out on the final day for withdrawals, alleging government influence in the election process.

As a result, the contest has lost much of its competitiveness. For the 12 club representative seats (Category–2), only 15 candidates remain. The BCB election is scheduled for 6 October.
