A BNP leader was allegedly stabbed during a clash over the use of a local truck workers’ union office in Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon on Sunday.
Abu Raihan Guitar, 23, publicity and publication secretary of Badalgachhi upazila BNP, was allegedly stabbed by Sujaul Islam, an expelled general secretary of the Mathurapur union unit of the Krishak Dal, according to local sources and the injured leader.
Abu Raihan was initially taken to Badalgachhi Upazila Health Complex. As his condition worsened, he was referred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.
Another youth, Shaheen, was also injured while allegedly trying to protect Abu Raihan.
The incident took place at Goborchapa intersection around Sunday afternoon amid tensions over the use of a room belonging to the truck workers’ union.
According to locals, a dispute had developed over the use of the room. At one point, a clash broke out between the two sides.
Abu Raihan said he went to the spot to calm the situation but was attacked.
“I was trying to control the situation between the two sides. At one point, Sujaul Islam stabbed me,” he said.
Local people later allegedly beat Sujaul, leaving him injured. He was also treated at the Badalgachhi health complex.
Siam, son of Sujaul, answered his father’s phone when contacted. He claimed his father had been using the union office for about four years but was recently prevented from doing so by Abu Raihan’s associates.
“There were people affiliated with the Awami League sitting in the room. A fight broke out over the issue this afternoon,” he said, adding that he did not know more about the incident.
Asaduzzaman Nahid, residential medical officer at Badalgachhi Upazila Health Complex, said Abu Raihan had suffered a deep wound to his chest and was bleeding heavily.
“As the necessary equipment for further examinations is not available here, we referred him to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for advanced treatment,” he said.
Badalgachhi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ruhul Amin said police visited the scene after receiving information about the incident.
“We have not received any complaint yet. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed,” he said.
